Format: The format for the volleyball tournament included a preliminary group stage followed by quarterfinals, semifinals and finals. In the preliminary phase the 12 participating teams were split into two pools of six in a round robin format with each team playing every other team in their group. The top four teams in each pool advanced to the quarterfinals. Each match was the best of five sets. Sets one to four were up to 25 points and set five was up to 15 points, with all sets requiring a two point advantage to win.
