About the Asian Games

The Asian Games is one of the biggest multi-sport events in the world today in which thousands of athletes from all over Asia participate every four years in a lot of different sports competitions. Asian Games are governed by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). OCA and the Asian Games are recognized by the International Olympic Committee as hosting the continental games of Asia involving for example qualification in some sports for entering the Olympic Games.

There have been organized multi-sports games in the eastern part of Asia since 1913, but the first unified Asian Games were held in 1951 in New Delhi, India. The second Asian Games were held in 1954 in Manila, Philippines. From then onwards the games have been organized every four years.

From 1951 and onwards the unified Asian Games were organized by the Asian Games Federation, but in 1981 the organization decided to change the name to Olympic Council of Asia. In 2020 OCA had 45 members in the form of Asian National Olympic Committees.

* Beta-info: Olympian Database normally hold - as a minimum - all historic medalists in a given event type. This is not yet the case for the Asian Games but we are continually working towards this. All-time champions lists for each event, all-time medal tables in sports or for a nation etc. are therefore incomplete. We have chosen to present what we have at the current time for the interest in for example the list of sports for the recent Asian Games that are already completed.
