Format: Speed skating at the Olympic Games consists of 12 events: 500 m, 1000 m, 1500 m and 5000 m for both men and women, 3000 m for women, 10000 m for men and two team pursuit events for both men and women. In the individual events the athletes run in pairs on a 400 m oval rink. In the 1000 m, 1500 m, 3000 m, 5000 m and 10000 m events the winner is the athlete with the fastest time for a single race. In 500 m the distance is skated twice, and the winner is the athlete with the best total time for the two races.
