Event Format: Biathlon combines cross country skiing and small calibre rifle shooting. Biathlon at the Olympic Games consists of eleven events, five for women, five for men and one mixed event. The events are individual start, sprint, pursuit, mass start and team relay. In the Team Relay races (women’s 4x6 km, men’s 4x7,5 km and the Mixed Relay) all participating teams consist of four athletes and all teams start at the same time. There are two shooting stages in each leg, one in a standing position and one in a prone position, all with three extra bullets to be loaded by hand if necessary. The athletes must run a 150 m penalty loop for every missed target after the extra shots. The team to finish first is the winner of the race.
