Event Format: Biathlon combines cross country skiing and small calibre rifle shooting. Biathlon at the Olympic Games consists of eleven events, five for women, five for men and one mixed event. The events are individual start, sprint, pursuit, mass start and team relay. In the Mass Start race (womens 12,5 km and mens 15 km) the 30 highest ranked athletes start together at the same time. There are four shooting stages in the race, two in a standing position and two in a prone position. The athletes must run a 150 m penalty loop for every missed target.
