Event Format: Biathlon combines cross country skiing and small calibre rifle shooting. Biathlon at the Olympic Games consists of eleven events, five for women, five for men and one mixed event. The events are individual start, sprint, pursuit, mass start and team relay. In the Individual start race (womens 15 km and mens 20 km) the athletes compete against the clock. There are four shooting stages in the race, two in a standing position and two in a prone position. The athletes are penalized one minute for each missed target. The skiers start the race with an interval of one minute and the winner is the skier with the fastest time at the finish line.
