Event Format: Biathlon combines cross country skiing and small calibre rifle shooting. Biathlon at the Olympic Games consists of eleven events, five for women, five for men and one mixed event. The events are individual start, sprint, pursuit, mass start and team relay. In the Pursuit race (womens 10 km and mens 12,5 km) the athletes start with a delay depending on their finish time in the Sprint event. There are four shooting stages in the race, two in a standing position and two in a prone position. The athletes must run a 150 m penalty loop for every missed target.
