Event Format: Short track skaters competed in heats on a 111 m oval ice track. The competition format included preliminary heats, semifinals, B-final and A-final. Normally six skaters competed in each heat and the top three finishers in the preliminaries and the top two finishers in the semifinals advanced to the next round. The B-final determined the classification from place no. 7 to 12 and the A-final from place no. 1 to 6. The Olympic gold medal winner was the short track skater winning the A-final.
