Swimming at the 2000 Winter Olympics in Sydney

In Sydney International Aquatic Centre more than 17.000 spectators witnessed the swimming events each day and the competitions proved to be some of the best in olympic history.

The Sydney 2000 swimming competitions proved once more that the USA could be considered the leading swimming nation, even though the host nation Australia started out with huge expectations and a team of superstars like Ian Thorpe, Susie O'Neill, Michael Klim and Grant Hackett. The Dutch team added super stars Inge de Bruijn and Pieter van den Hoogenband in the equation but it didn?t prevent the Americans from winning 14 gold medals out of 32 possible.

The Australian officials? ambition were to arrange swimming competitions that would set a new standard and they were to the full able to obtain this displaying their old and strong swimming culture.

In terms of results the competitions in Sydney also set a new standard for the future. In total there were 14 world records during the eight days of competitions and the world record was lowered in 11 of the 32 olympic events. In addition there were 15 other events where the Olympic record was bettered. Many swimming enthusiasts enjoyed the fact that a number of dubious records due to accusations of doping were deleted in Sydney.
