After a qualifying round the 16 athletes with the best results competed under a knock-out system with round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and finals. Each match in the knock-out rounds consisted of two heats as the riders switched courses in heat 1 and 2. The combined time for the two heats was used to decide the winner. The Olympic gold medal winner was the rider winning the Gold medal race.
