* Andreea Raducan ROU won the all-around event but four days later she was tested positive for pseudoephedrine, a banned ingredient in some medicine given by her doctor to cure a fever a few days before the Olympics. In September 2000 the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) decided that Raducan was disqualified from the all-around event but she could keep her other medals from the Sydney Olympics. ** Dong Fangxiao CHN disqualified from the competition. In 2010 the International Gymnastics Federation found out that Dong was only 14 years old in 2000 - too young to compete at the Sydney Olympics.

Event Format: First step in the gymnastics competition was the team competition/qualifying round in which all entrants performed optional exercises on all apparatuses. The 36 highest scoring gymnasts qualified to the individual all-round final. No more than three gymnasts from any country could advance to the final. In the final the gymnasts performed optional exercises on all apparatus. The final scoring for each gymnast was the points scored in the final, as the qualifying scores were not carried over.
