At the olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002 "Tre Kronor" - Sweden's ice hockey team for the men - was highly unexpectedly beaten by the Belarus team in the quarter finals, when star keeper Tommy Salo dropped a harmless shot into the net.

In Torino 2006 Sweden had their revenge after the disappointment four years earlier. With gold in the men's tournament and silver in the women's Sweden became best ice hockey nation in Torino.

The ice hockey games in Torino - for both men and women - were primarily played in Palasport Olimpico, a newly build skating arena in Torino with a capacity around 12.000 spectators. As the only sport the ice hockey competitions went on during the entire period of the games with just one resting day. From saturday 11th of February where the women's preliminary round started and until Sunday the 26th of February when the men's final concluded all the olympic competitions in Torino.

The men's tournament included all the best players from the NHL as the North-American Hockey League took a two weeks break during the olympics. The Swedish gold winners included star players like Peter Forsberg, Mats Sundin and Nicklas Lidström, Finland competed with Antero Niittymäki and Teemu Selänne, the Czech's with Dominik Hasek and Jaromir Jagr and Canada with Martin Brodeur, Joe Sakic and with the legendary Wayne Gretzky as head coach.

The tournament was a major disappointment for ice hockey nations like USA and the defending champions from Canada as both teams were eliminated in the quarter finals. The world champions from the Czech Republic also didn't live up to expectations by finishing third in the tournament. In stead the teams from Sweden and Finland reached the final and played an entertaining final that ended with a 3-2 victory for Sweden.

In the Women's event Canada were overwhelmingly superior. The Canadians won all their five games with a total score of 46-2. In the final Sweden were beaten by 4-1. In the semi finals the Swedes made the surprise of the tournament as they beat the USA 3-2.
