Olympic event format at the 2014 Olympic Games - Cross Country Format: The individual sprint event began with a qualifying round in which the cross country skiers started with an interval of 15 seconds and raced a short course. The 30 fastest skiers in the qualifying round ran quarterfinals, semifinals and finals on an approximately 1,7 km long course. The two fastest skiers in each heat and two "lucky loosers" advanced to the next round. Six skiers competed in the final and the Olympic gold medal winner was the skier to finish first in the final.
